Evil never posed so good!
Series: Mastermind Creations Reformatted
Allegiance: Autobot
Year: 2022

Prelude: When you’re a Third Party company creating a figure inspired by Optimus Prime, why not name it Optus Prominon? Sure, it’s a bit of bastardized Latin, but it more or less means the same thing. Also, every Optimus Prime figure, be it official or third party, needs to be repainted at least once, preferably numerous times. And while the old black repaint remains the favorite, the purple Shattered Glass (or Servered Geist, rather) version is almost as prominent by now. So let us take a look at Mastermind Creations’ version of the evil Autobot leader. Let’s say go!

Robot Mode: The first thing I have to say about this robot here: dear god, is this thing well-articulated! I won’t go so far as to call it the best-articulated Transformers / Third Party figure ever, but he’s got to be in the top 10 at least. Optus Prominon can do just about any pose imaginable, from running, leaning, kneeling, dancing, pointing, and whatever else you might think of. From individual triple-jointed fingers to multi-jointed feet, he can do it all. He’s also a highly detailed robot with lots of sculpted details and small extra parts, making him look highly intricate. This figure is based on Optimus Prime’s appearance in the IDW comics, specifically his pre-Earth look, which I love and adore. So in terms of looks and posing ability, I have absolutely no complaints here.

Optus comes with quite a few accessory parts. His main weapons – apart from the removeable smokestacks on his forearms – are two black blasters he can either hold in his hands or mount on his shoulders. I love the shoulder option, especially since the guns can flip up and forward. Very nicely done. He also carries a huge axe, as most Optimus figures do these days, which he can wield one- or two-handed with a long or short handle, your choice. To emphasize his evilness, he also comes with a black cape, complete with collar piece. The nice thing about the cape is that it contains wire, so you can move it into any shape you want. Very nice.

As is almost standard for most Optimus Prime figures, official or third party, Optus Prominon can open up his chest, revealing a Matrix of Leadership (is it called that in Shattered Glass?). The unusual thing, and really my one and only complaint about this figure, is that it’s just the centerpiece of the Matrix inside his chest. The handles of the Matrix are extra parts, which he can carry on his hips. I would very much prefer the whole thing to be one piece, as the handles easily fall off his hip and are thus easy to get lost.

Finally, Optus also comes with an extra face. It’s really just Optus’ face without the mouth plate. Also included is another head, which is also Optus without a mouth plate, but in regular Optimus Prime blue, not the darker Shattered Glass grey. I assume it’s for MMC’s first Optus figure.

So bottom line: a brilliant robot mode. Whether you prefer him in original blue and red, Shattered Glass purple or Nemesis black is entirely up to you.

Alternate Mode: Unsurprisingly Optus Prominon transforms into a truck, a futuristic one in this case. And… yeah, that’s pretty much all I have to say here. The transformation is complex, but not difficult. It’s clearly a truck. The blasters can be mounted on top. That’s really it, I fear. He’s a truck.

Oh, one more thing: just like in robot mode, you are stuck with the Matrix handles being loose extra parts precariously stuck to the outside. Apart from that, though? A perfectly serviceable, though somewhat boring truck mode.

Remarks: Before he became Optimus Prime, Orion Pax was a police captain in Iacon and had to deal with the growing unrest between the Functionists, the Autocracy, and the emerging Decepticon movement. He would eventually join forces with the revolutionary called Megatron to topple the corrupt Zeta Prime, only to be immediately betrayed by his supposed friend. Cybertron itself would bestow the Matrix upon Orion Pax, transforming him into Optimus Prime.

Mastermind Creations created an awesome third party figure inspired by that awesome Optimus Prime design and, of course, created multiple colored versions of it, too. The reason I bought the Shattered Glass (and what the hell is a Servered Geist?) version is because it was on sale. The only downsides of this great figure are the rather boring alternate mode and the loose Matrix handles, otherwise I have nothing to complain about. If you enjoy Optimus Prime figures and are not opposed to third party toys, you should own at least one version of this excellent robot here.
