You remember me being cool in that one G1 episode!

Prelude: Remember that cool bounty hunter guy? No, not Lockdown, the one from G1. That one episode where Smokescreen gambled away the lives of his fellow Autobots and then felt really bad about it? Yeah, that’s when Autobot bounty hunter Devcon debuted. Now this show-only character who was never intended to become a toy has gotten a new toy in Legacy Evolution. But where is Slizardo? Let’s say go!

Robot Mode: Devcon is a Deluxe-sized robot that very nicely captures the look of the cartoon character he is supposed to portray. Now remember, Devcon as he appeared in the cartoon was never intended to be a transforming toy, so props to the designers for creating an almost spitting image of the character that can do exactly that. The only real difference to the cartoon model is the rucksack, which contains the front end of the spaceship mode. Apart from that Devcon has a very clean silhouette with nearly no kibble.

Articulation is current standard, meaning very good. No twisting wrists, but that’s about the only limitation. His rather big feet give him a solid platform for all sorts of poses. He also features multiple 5mm holes for attaching weapons, including two on each arm, two on the back, and two on the legs. He carries a silver blaster, also quite close to the one he had in the cartoon, which he can either hold in hand or attach to his forearm.

Additional accessories are two red booster units, which are really for the spaceship mode, but have to go somewhere in robot mode, too. You can attach them to the back of the legs or the rucksack, or use them as additional weapons by attaching them to either the arms or the gun, creating a super gun.

So bottom line for the robot mode: great cartoon resemblance, no flaws worth mentioning. No complaints.

Alternate Mode: Devcon was a rather unusual Autobot in that he had an alternate mode that wasn’t just capable of flight, but also of space flight. He transforms into a spaceship somewhat resembling that of Scourge a bit, basically a blue skiff with very tiny wings and big engines. The transformation is rather simply, as Devcon just lies on his back, folds his rucksack over his head, and pulls in his legs, done.

The spaceship is a pretty close match to the craft we (briefly) saw on screen in the G1 episode and technically there are no visible robot bits, not even on the underside. If you ignore that the ship’s sides are very obviously the robot’s arms, of course. The red engines can be mounted on the back and the silver gun can be plugged in underneath the nose.

Not really that much more I can write here. Easy transformation, nice-looking spaceship, strong resemblance to the cartoon craft. So no real complaints.

Remarks: Devcon was originally just a one-off character created exclusively for the G1 episode “The Gambler”. Apparently he was created as a slight homage to Boba Fett, as the script called for a bounty hunter, but there were no such characters among the existing cast. He proved to be somewhat popular and returned in 3H Productions’ “Transformers Universe: The Wreckers” comic book series, though the exclusive toy planned for him (a repaint of Beast Machines Mirage) never materialized. He eventually got a toy in the Transformers Collectors Club, another repaint, before finally getting his own figure in Legacy Evolution.

By the way, if you don’t remember who Slizardo is, he’s the lizard-like alien guy who became Devcon’s sidekick at the end of the episode. According to the 3H Productions comic, Devcon pushed him out of an airlock shortly afterwards. Nice guy, this Devcon.

As a toy, Legacy Evolution Devcon is exactly as advertised: a toy version of the character that appeared in that one episode of G1 forty years ago. It’s not a terribly spectacular toy, doesn’t feature any revolutionary gimmicks or anything, but it’s a good, solid toy of the character. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re getting it here.
