Is he riding He-Man now?
Series: Masters of the Universe X Thundercats
Year: 2025

Prelude: Is he a descendant of Battle Cat? Or did Battle Cat evolve into a humanoid form? Is he a Thundarian who just happens to look like Battle Cat? No idea, to be honest, but if you’re doing a Thundercats X Masters of the Universe crossover, it was a given that Battle Cat would be involved in some way. So here we have Battle Cat-Man. Let’s say hooooooo!

Review: The premise of this figure here is pretty simple, really. Most of the Thundercats are anthropomorphic cats, so taking one of the most famous MotU characters, Battle Cat, and making him a humanoid Thundercat wasn’t much of a leap. Battle Cat-Man (I love that name, to be honest) is a humanoid figure covered in green fur with yellow stripes, who wears red battle armor and a red helmet, the latter very similarly designed to the helmet Battle Cat wears. He also wears a chest harness with the Thundercats symbol on it.

The figure’s head is a dead ringer for Battle Cat’s (or Cringer’s, too), including the slight underbite. He wears the classic He-Man furry pants and furry boots, though the latter are more like shin guards, as his feet are bare. His only weapons are two red claw-gauntlets he can snap into his hands, which looks very, very cool. All the armor pieces and the furry pants, too, can be removed, leaving Battle Cat-Man dressed in nothing but black underpants.

The articulation is standard for the line, meaning pretty good, and Battle Cat-Man can hold just about every MotU weapon in hand, too. The back of his chest harness features two holes, which seem to have little function here. They do, however, fit with the two pieces of Skell-Ra’s cape, so you can give Battle Cat-Man a red cape, too, if you want. Looks a bit weird, but fits.

Bottom line: the figure itself is nice, somewhat reminiscent of Chief Carnivus from the Classics line, but the fact that it’s Battle Cat as a Thundarian already sold me on this and I was not disappointed. Very nice execution of an idea so simple, I wonder why no one else ever thought of it before.

Remarks: I honestly have no idea what the story of Battle Cat-Man is. In the pack-in comics he simply turns up for the battle, Lion-O recognizes him as a Thundarian, but whether he is Battle Cat, related to Battle Cat, or just happens to look like him is not explained. Given that the entire story apparently takes place on a world called “Third Eternia”, I’d assume he is some sort of composite character, but that’s just my take.

Whatever his origin, I love this guy. He carries the absurd name of a MotU character, he looks like Battle Cat, but he is clearly a Thundercat. Fabulous! I hope you can forgive me for that picture where Battle Cat-Man is riding He-Man, I couldn’t help myself. Either way, if you are in any way a fan of Thundercats, Battle Cat, or wonderfully weird character amalgamations, this is a figure for you.
